Scholarships
The following is offered
to provide clarity and direction for opportunities available
to members of Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Latrobe, PA, who seek financial support as
they attend Thiel College,
other ELCA affiliated colleges or universities, seminary, or
seek a Church vocation. Each scholarship
listed is for a single academic year; application must be made
each year to renewal all scholarships
available to Trinity members. Further details and deadline
dates for required written
applications are presented
in the discussions below the scholarship listings.
In addition to the
scholarships listed below, if you have any insurance products
with a Lutheran fraternal
benefit society (i.e., Thrivent Financial for Lutherans), you
may also be eligible for financial assistance through such
an organization. Contact your local fraternal insurance agent
or see their related link www.thrivent.com.
Other scholarship and financial aid will likely be available
to you, especially at ELCA
affiliated colleges, universities and seminaries, through the
higher learning institution
you attend. Discuss these matters with your institution’s financial
aid office.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS
The Paul R. Daw
Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to an active
Trinity member, with a preference given to those involved
in scouting, pursuing a degree or certification at a college,
university or technical school. Applications are available
from the church office and on Trinity’s website under
Governance Documents, Continuing Resolution C12.05.M03.
A completed application and an essay on "the importance
of faith in my life" must be submitted for each academic
year and received by the church office no later than May
31st for the next academic year. The Special
Gifts Committee will also interview applicants. Recommendations
are at the discretion of the Special
Gifts Committee with final determination by the Congregation
Council. The $500 scholarship will be made payable to the
higher learning institution listed on the application. The
scholarship is paid in two installments; the first in August
and the second in
January of each academic year.
Thiel College has two
endowment scholarships available to Trinity member students:
the Reverend John L.
Reiner Scholarship and
the Trinity Memorial Scholarship. A written request
must be made each academic year to a Trinity pastor by March
31st. The pastor will bring your
request for financial aid to the Congregation Council in April.
Thiel College must be notified by
our congregation before the end of April as to how much aid
from each endowment scholarship is
to be awarded each applicant for the next academic year. The
monies in these endowment scholarships
are invested and directly controlled by Thiel College to provide
financial support to students
who are members of Trinity or other ELCA congregations if no
Trinity members are in attendance
at Thiel College. The total amount awarded each year to all
recipients of both scholarships
is approximately $2,500, which is usually divided equally among
all Thiel College students
who are both members of Trinity and make written application
for financial aid.
The Dr. Ned J. Nakles
Memorial Scholarship is an "in-house" Thiel
College scholarship awarded to one student each year, with
a preference given to Trinity members. Applications are available
only from Thiel College and must be submitted usually not
later than March 31st to Thiel’s
Financial Aid Office. Criteria include a 3.0 GPA and participation
in community service. The
Dr. Ned J. Nakles Memorial Scholarship recipient is chosen
and awarded directly by Thiel College.
The scholarship award amount will vary year-to-year dependent
upon the endowment fund investment earnings, but is approximately
$1,300 per year.
The Pastor Ronald
M. Brant Memorial Scholarship is available to a Trinity
member who seeks a Church
vocation. A written application must be must be submitted
for each academic year and received
by the church office no later than May 31st for the
next academic year. Seminarians are given
preference for the annual scholarship award; recommendations
are at the discretion of the Special
Gifts Committee with final determination by the Congregation
Council. The award amount varies
from year-to-year and is dependent upon the trust fund annual
investment earnings; however,
the total amount that is awarded to one applicant annually
is approximately $150. Scholarship
awards are made payable directly to the higher learning institution,
which must be identified
in the written application, and sent to the scholarship recipient
for remittance to the learning
institution. The scholarship is paid in two installments;
the first in August and the second in
January of each academic year.
Mary Martha Himler
Memorial Scholarships are
available to Trinity members attending Thiel College
or an ELCA seminary. The award amounts vary from year-to-year
and are dependent upon the
number of applicants and trust fund annual investment earnings;
however, the total annual amount,
which is usually divided equally between all recipients,
is approximately $1,200. Application
and scholarship requirements (regular worship attendance,
campus ministry involvement,
report to the Congregation Council, minimum 2.0 GPA, etc.)
are available from the church
office or at Trinity’s website under Governance
Documents, Continuing Resolution C12.05.H02. Applications
must be received by the
church office no later than May 31st for the next
academic year. Scholarship awards
are made payable directly to Thiel College or the seminary
named on the application and sent
to the scholarship recipient for remittance to the learning
institution. The scholarships are paid in
two installments; the first in August and the second in January
of each academic year.
The Pastor Karl
E. & Margaret Kniseley Memorial Scholarship was established
to provide financial aid to Trinity
member seminarians. The award amounts vary from year-to-year
and are dependent upon the
number of applicants and annual income derived from Trinity
Acres. Applications are available
from the church office or at Trinity’s website under Governance
Documents, Continuing Resolution
C12.05.I02. Applications
must be received by the church office no later than May
31st for the next academic year.
Scholarship awards are made payable directly to the seminary
named on the application and sent
to the scholarship recipient for remittance to the seminary.
The scholarships are paid in two installments;
the first in August and the second in January of each academic
year.
The Church Vocation
Fund offers an interest-free revolving loan for Trinity
members who are seminarians
or undergraduates seeking a Church vocation. A written application
must be submitted for
each academic year and received by the church office no later
than May 31st for the next
academic year. The loan amount will vary year-to-year dependent
upon the trust fund annual investment
earnings, loan payments received from former students, and
number of applicants. However,
applicants should not expect loans of more than $1,000 for
any academic year. All loan recommendations
are at the discretion of the Special Gifts Committee with
final determination by the
Congregation Council. A loan agreement is required between
the applicant and the church and reimbursements
must commence within one year of graduation or termination
of studies.
The Westmoreland
Educational Society awards scholarships to Lutheran students
whose home congregation
is in Westmoreland County and attends an ELCA affiliated
college or seminary. The award
amounts vary from year-to-year and are dependent upon the
number of applicants and annual
investment earnings. Application forms and scholarship requirements
can be obtained from Mrs.
Lisa Robosky, Chairperson, Westmoreland Educational Society,

PA 15601-2918. Mrs. Lisa Robosky’s telephone number is 724-832-7349. Applications
must be received by the Westmoreland Educational Society
usually not later than May
1st for the next academic
year. The scholarship awards are made payable directly to
the ELCA affiliated college
or seminary named on your application and sent to the scholarship recipient
for remittance to the higher learning institution. The scholarships
are paid in two installments;
the first in August and the second in January of each academic
year.
